“All living things share a connection. Some call this an energy, others a life force. I like to simply call it connectedness” – Jenelle Kim, DACM, L.Ac, Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine.

Janelle Kim, amongst other things, is an Asian historian of remarkable insights. She carries within her the rich tradition and wealth of history of China and the rest of Asian; historical traditions and ways of life. However, she has decided to focus on Asian herbs and their history and their importance and position in the modern world. She stands at the intersection of Chinese tradition and Western tradition.

The whole world belongs to you. Every corner of it. Your spirit, that inner person within you reaches to all over the world. Allow Korea to touch you, because after all you are universal in character and that makes you to be also Korean. You might be in Los Angeles or London or Paris or New York but your inner persona extends way beyond the artificial boundaries called countries. It expands to reach and cover the whole globe. You are everywhere. The whole world has you. You need to experience the world to full capacity. You need to touch and feel every piece of it. It belongs to you.

But we know how impossible to visit and appreciate every piece of land in the world and breath it. I am from the very heart of Korea, Naganeupseong folk village: thatched roofs, houses made with raw stones, and no plumbing, people naturally bathing, hunting and cooking in open fires. Life here is naturally enchanting.

Here there is connection with the powers that have made us.

I am interested in a period in Europe and America that is called the Romantic period. The Romantic period was a great period for the Western people.

What is Romanticism? In expression, Romanticism is a spirit for the appreciation of nature. Back to nature was the slogan. Jean Jacques Rousseau was the leader of this movement. I like that. The Romantic period or Romanticism was about being sick and tired of the honking noise and busy life of the cities and a cry for escape to the natural forests where you will open your heart and mind to nature and find true deeper self.

So many people have lost this deep connection with themselves and the supreme authority.

The reason we have existentialism as a mode of philosophy it is because people are suffering. They have lost touch with themselves. And so Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, one of the proponents of existentialism cry in pain: Who am I? While the French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre tells us in his book Being and Nothingness, that existence precedes being. Which simply means that you as a being you are nothing, you only become a being by constructing ideas out of your immediate locale.

Frederick Nietzsche, the German philosopher, another existentialist has said that God is dead. The concept of the death of God is perhaps the best known of all Nietzsche many compelling contributions to philosophy. By the idea of the death of God, Nietzsche means the death of our believe in God. It is our believe in God that is dead. If we have lost our believe in God then we are free, we do not have morals anymore. Nietzsche says our loosing faith in God means that now we are no longer subjected to God, we are no longer children. We are now supermen. We are no longer like camels squating down under God’s control.

While Arthur Schopenhauer tells us God made a big mistake for creating human beings.

I believe that existentialism is fatalism. It disconnects you from your higher self. So many have lost that connection with themselves.

We needs paths and moments to return back to where we are from. We need to return back to the basics.

Existentialism was simply an experiment and exploration, and it has lost relevance. Just like a person experimenting with life in his or her adolescence stage but later shed off that stupidity.

We need to return to the old paths of maturity. You precedes everything around you. You precedes existence. You have come here already being part of higher consciousness.

Here in Korea, Naganeupseong folk village is along the rivers and cool rolling green hills and valleys. I have vividly captured the mood and the scenery, melodies of birds and the silent rhythms of everyday life. It is all here for you to experience, feel and touch Korean natural vibe and scenery.

Great pleasures are the pleasures when we open ourselves to nature and allow nature to transport us to the deep recesses of our inner selves far away from the honking noise. Nature is calming medicine and it is only when we are calm that we are healthy and have sound mental health. You are Korea and Korea is you.

  • The Sophists

As the 5th century BC ended a group of philosophers called the sophists appeared. The word sophiste means either one who makes wise or possibly one who deals with wisdom. These sophists were traveling itinerary teachers and lecturers travelling far and wide crisscrossing trading in Sophia. It was Sophia – Wisdom. It was arête – virtue. It was…
